Dear Sir or Madam,
As an Australian shopper, animal welfare is a significant influence on my buying habits. Just like me, more Australians than ever care about where their food comes from and how animals are raised. Your business has the opportunity to make a positive impact on animal welfare and show consumers this is an important issue to you too. Cage eggs come from hens that spend their lives in cages and are unable to exhibit any of their natural behaviours like laying their eggs in a nest, dust bathing, perching and even stretching their wings. The use of cages and the detrimental effect to a hen’s welfare may be deemed acceptable under the model code, but it is not acceptable to Australian shoppers. More importantly, it is not acceptable to profit from this cruelty. I strongly encourage your business to take a stand against hens in cages by making a public commitment to phase out the sale of cage eggs in your stores. Your commitment will not only improve the lives of millions of hens across the country, but will also meet social responsibility and community expectations. It’s time for all supermarkets to stop selling cage eggs, don’t be the last one standing – make a commitment today.
